Tobias Hurwitz 在美國馬里蘭州的巴爾的摩市（Baltimore, Maryland）長大，畢業於美國著名的吉他技術學院GIT（Guitar Institute of Technology），他從1977年便熱愛於彈奏搖滾吉他，曾經在全國吉他學苑（The National Guitar Workshop）教授吉他課程，以及指導馬里蘭州的DayJams 搖滾音樂營。您可以在一些知名的吉他雜誌（像是 Guitar Player, Guitar one 以及Guitar Magazine 等）中找到他的教學專題，Tobias 發行了許多吉他教學書籍（像是由The National Guitar Workshop 出版的Book of Six Strings 、Rock Chops for Guitar 以及Alfred 出版的 Punk Guitar Styles 、7-String Guitar 、 The Total Rock Guitarist 、Guitar Shop Series: Getting Your Sound ..）。過去曾與眾多知名樂手合作或錄音，像是Michael Angel Batio, Stanley Clarke. J. Geils, The Coasters, Joe Pass 以及 Dennis Chambers 等。

Tobias Hurwitz 受到了吉他手 Philip Toshio Sudo （1959年10月20日出生於明尼蘇達州的日美混血吉他手）所出版的書籍“Zen Guitar”的感召下，因而深深投入了禪吉他運動（Zen Guitar movement ），所謂的Zen Guitar，字面上的意思即是以吉他的方式來表現出禪意，通常著重於吉他傳遞出的心靈層次更勝技術層面，鼓勵直覺式的即興彈奏，發自內心表現出自己最自然、舒適、深層的音樂感受，或者擷取靈光乍現下的美妙音符，不刻意取悅他人。這個名詞因為Philip Toshio Sudo 在1997年所發行的"Zen Guitar" 這本書而開始受到各界重視。2007年4月的時候，The National Guitar Workshop 出版社再次跟隨著"Zen Guitar" 的精神，發行了Philip Toshio Sudo 和 Tobias Hurwitz 共同合作的"The Book of Six Strings: The Six-Fold Path of Zen Guitar" 這本書（ Philip Toshio Sudo 於2002年6月9日因癌症病逝，最後由Tobias 完成了該著作 ）。若要感受 Tobias Hurwitz 饒富禪意、來自心海的吉他演奏專輯，或許可以參考他的 The Way Of Zen Guitar 以及 Painted Sky 這些專輯。此外，Tobias 的吉他音樂元素也包括了放克/funk、搖滾/rock、金屬 / metal、爵士/jazz 等。
